With the aging of population, the health of the elderly has become an important issue worthy of attention. As a person grows older, the chances of diminished functional capacity increase significantly. A health evaluation becomes essential for a proper and wholesome assistance to the elder's health and wellbeing. In this context, the following study intends to investigate the leading factors associated with functional incapacity in elders. This research utilized an observational, descriptive, analytical, cross-sectional, study held in the period of March 2010 to November, 2014. The study was based on 266 elders who were registered in the Family Health Strategy (ESF) of the city of Londrina, PR. The case studies were statistically selected respecting the confidence interval of 95% and sampling error of 5%. For the data collection, the mechanism used investigated demographical and socio-economical aspects that served as indicators to health, chronic illness and functional incapacity. From those selected for the case study, 173 (65%) were female, the average age was 77.5 years (DP±8.2). According to the results of the research, the functional incapacity presented statistic correlation to the age group (p<0.0001), marital status (p=0.0475), compromised daily activities (p<0.0001), nutritional state (p<0.0001), the presence of illnesses like Alzheimer (p<0.0001), Encephalic Vascular Accident (EVA) (p<0.0001), Vascular Problems (p=0.0023), Dyslipidemia (p=0348), Arterial Hypertension (p=0.0362), Parkinson (p=0.0439), Gastrointestinal Illnesses (p=0.0485). With the application of the Functional Independence Measurement, it was possible to observe statistic association with self-care, sphincter control, locomotion and cognition (p<0.0001) which influenced the levels of incapacity in elders.
