The preservation of library collections, especially books, is a great challenge for managing libraries nowadays. In recent years, the book has suffered a lot of damage not only because of the harmful effects of environmental and biological agents, but also by the inappropriate use by students. Thus, awareness among students about a better way to handle a book favors its preservation, and assures the use of the book by a larger number of students. For this purpose, an educational campaign with the students of the first years of an elementary school in the city of Botucatu was carried out to teach them how to take good care of library books, which are a public materials, purchased using government resources. The educational campaign was well evaluated by students and it achieved its goal. It is expected that these actions may contribute to forming citizens more aware of their role in society.
