Since Brazil's colonization, occupation of territory occurred in a predatory manner. This process of exploitation of natural resources occurred through the practice of deforestation for timber and / or for opening of new agricultural frontiers. However, these practices may cause some negative effects, such as soil degradation and vegetation, siltation of streams and loss of biodiversity. The ecological economic zonation has been considered a viable strategy to direct the implementation of public policies that contribute to territorial planning at the municipal level. The objective of this study was to characterize the environment through the development of a conceptual model of zoning for the city of Altinópolis, SP. With the aid of geographical information systems (GIS) we generated maps to define six areas of use: protection, restoration, urban area, special use, agricultural potential and potential recharge to the aquifer. From our analysis we found that 30% of the municipality showed use restrictions under current forest legislation. Furthermore, we identified that 45% of land have potential for groundwater recharge and 70% of the territory have agrosilvicultural potential favored by soil, climate and local relief. We also observed a loss of 76 quliometers of watercourses through degradation processes, due to the decrease in 18% of the existing 641 springs. These results points to the need to implement public policies that encourage conservation of existing forests and also the restoration of degraded areas, especially areas of groundwater recharge. Future economic activities also need to be explored adequately to provide further strengthening of the primary economic sector of the municipality
