This research aims to analyze two aspects of the novel The Book Thief, by the author Markus Zusak, while it focus on the background of the traditional Bildungsroman, the coming-of-age novel or novel-of-self-cultivation, a German narrative genre that, in its traditional form, centralizes the process of growth and development of the protagonist from childhood until her maturity. The reading will focus on the interpretation of the novel from two guiding literary elements, the protagonist and the narrator. This paper will deal first with a brief historical and literary conceptualization of the coming-of-age novel. In a second moment, it will be analyzed in the novel of Zusak the main events that indicate the protagonist's intellectual, moral and political development: informal education and her relationship with mentor characters, the first case of teenage love and her relation with the words and reading. Finally, this reading will approach the Death as the storyteller of the gradual development of the protagonist, through a speech filled by irony, intrusions and judgments. Therefore, this research, supported by a narrative genre - traditional and historically situated in late eighteenth-century German society - investigates its intertextuality with The Book Thief, an Australian bestseller sold on a global scale in the twenty-first century. Simultaneously, reveals its divergences from tradition, granting the novel, from the voice of the storyteller, a peculiar perspective of the protagonist on the Nazi regime in Germany
