Resumo: Reduction of greenhouse gas emission has posed great technological challenges to the industrial models standing. Furthermore, the clean development mechanism (CDM) and CO2 sequestration are fundamental on sustainable development, in order to reach safer levels of CO2. A promising mechanism for CO2 capture is by mineral carbonatation, where silicates rich in Mg, Ca and Fe, are transformed into carbonates. The main purpose of this work is to evaluate the potential for CO2 sequestration, in an exploratory way, for high grade metamafic and metaultramafic rocks of Amparo-Itapira Complex in the vicinity of Itapira, Amparo, Serra Negra and Lindóia (SP). The metamorphic rocks occur in lenticular layers and consist of amphibolites, intercalated with quartz-feldspathic rocks. The ultramafic rocks occur as discontinuous massive bodies that are rich in olivine, pyroxene and amphibole. Carbon sequestration potential of these metamorphic rocks, based on petrographic and lithogeochemical analyses are higher for rocks with high magnesium levels. These rocks can represent an important prospect for the evaluation of ore deposits to be used in processes of mineral carbonatation.
