Resumo: This text is about the formation of countries in the River Plate Basin, the largest military conflict involving these countries and the history about this war. Uruguay was the first target of the Portuguese crown, and later entered the area of influence of the Empire of Brazil. Suffered constant interventions and was the trigger for the Paraguayan War when it was invaded by imperial despite clear threats of President Solano Lopez, Paraguay in case of an intervention in Eastern State. Argentina turn faced a contentious process of unification, witnessing an intermittent war after the fall of Rosas, seeing two exponents: Urquiza and Mitre whose bases of support were the Argentine Confederation and the rich province of Buenos Aires. The Empire of Brazil was configured in single nation ruled by a monarch in America. Was an exception on a continent of republics. Differed also by the fact that it has consolidated political and judicial institutions, unlike their neighbors. Not to mention that his wealth was held by slave labor. Furthermore, entered a phase of stability, after internal revolts and the Second Empire, saw an industrial boom and was able to launch an imperialist policy. It was there also, that the slave trade was abolished, thus contributing to this estabildade. Paraguay in turn, presented a unique endogenous development, based on a strong peasantry. Singular also was the isolation of Paraguay, not voluntary but imposed by geographical conditions and to maintain independence. Paraguay was a peculiar state shaped by France, and modernized by the Lopez family. Singular was also their form of government, a dictatorship or tyranny of power proprietorship, imposed in times of Francia and consoled by his successors. Moreover, tyranny, where the people were consulted, and where they lacked the basic means of subsistence, and mainly: where everyone could read and write. And was the most destroyed after the war. But what about the discussion on the Paraguayan War? What say the divergent historiographical trends? What was the war? When she started? Who took the initiative? Who cares? These are questions that we do not intend to respond in a conclusive way, but simply to urge the new questions, or perhaps pave the way for further detailed studies. We know that you can not exhaust the subject, But Farmer possible to discuss the war with Paraguay, and to throw more light on this matter. Elucidate this important issue to history and historiography of Brazil and South AmericaO presente texto trata a respeito da formação dos países na Bacia do rio da Prata, do maior conflito militar envolvendo esses países e da historiografia a respeito dessa guerra. Quem tomou a iniciativa? A quem interessava?
