Resumo: | This study evaluated the biaxial flexural strength (BFS) and failure mode of a zirconia and porcelain in different thicknesses and cooling rates. Zirconia discs were made and covered with porcelain. Samples were divided into 7 groups (n = 30) according to the thickness of the porcelain (1.3 and 2.3 mm), the cooling rate (fast in all layers (RT), slow in all layers (LT), slow in the last layer (LU) and the manufacturer protocol. For fast cooling, the firing chamber was opened after the sintering cycle. For slow cooling, samples were maintained in the oven after the sintering cycle until room temperature. Samples were submitted to mechanical cycling using a flat piston of 3mm, for 5x 105 cycles, 2 Hz, 100N and under 37 ° C water. Samples were tested in biaxial bending keeping the porcelain under tensile stresses until the first signal of fracture (acoustic emission). The failure mode was analyzed. The BFS was calculated and analyzed by 2-way Anova, Tukey (5%), t-test and Weibull. The higher porcelain thickness resulted in lower BFS and lower structural reliability. Cooling did not influence the BFS for specimens with 1.3-porcelain thickness. For 2.3, 2RT presented greater strength than 2LU and 2LT. The predominant failure mode was porcelain crack. Discos de zircônia foram confeccionados e recobertos com porcelana (12 mm X 3 mm). Foram divididos em 7 grupos (n=30) de acordo com a espessura da porcelana (1,3 e 2,3 mm), e com o resfriamento (rápido em todas as camadas (RT), lento em todas as camadas (LT), lento na última camada (LU) e do fabricante. No resfriamento rápido, a câmara de queima do forno foi totalmente aberta após o ciclo de sinterização. No resfriamento lento, os grupos foram mantidos no forno após o ciclo de sinterização até a temperatura ambiente. As amostras foram submetidas a ciclagem mecânica utilizando pistão plano de 3mm, 5x 105 ciclos, 2 Hz, 100N e imersão em água a 37ºC). As amostras foram testadas em flexão biaxial mantendo a superfície da porcelana sob tração até o primeiro sinal de fratura (monitoramento acústico). O modo de falha foi analisado. O BFS foi calculado e analisado pelos testes Anova de 2 fatores, Tukey (5%), teste t e Weibull. A porcelana mais espessa resultou em menor valor de BFS e menor confiabilidade estrutural. O resfriamento não influenciou a BFS em porcelana com 1,3 mm. Para 2,3 mm, o 2RT apresentou maior resistência que 2LU e 2LT. O modo de falha predominante foi trinca da porcelana.
