Physiotherapeutic intervention's strategies in individuals with Alzheimer's Disease

Resumo: The aim of this literature review was to study physiotherapeutic intervention's strategies in individuals with Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer's disease is a disorder of the Central Nervous System, of degenerative sort, that results in gradually memory loss, behavior and personality changes and a decline in thinking abilities. The disease affects the functional and social performance due to the injury of specific cerebral structures responsible for cognitive process. The physiotherapeutic intervention can contribute in any stage of Alzheimer's Disease, acting as much as in the support and improvement of the functional acting of the patiente. It was considered initially points like epidemiology, physiopathology, etiology, diagnostic criterions and clinical aspects for a better agreement to physiotherapeutic intervention in patients with Alzheimer's disease. The data of this study were collected in original and review articles, and books about the subject. It was concluded that the physiotherapeutic intervention can proportionate a support in life quality of the individual with Alzheimer's disease.

A Doença de Alzheimer é uma desordem do Sistema Nervoso Central, de caráter degenerativo, que resulta gradualmente em uma perda da memória, alterações de comportamento e personalidade, juntamente com um declínio cognitivo. A doença afeta o desempenho funcional e social do indivíduo devido a lesão de estruturas cerebrais responsáveis pelos processos cognitivos. A intervenção fisioterapêutica pode contribuir em qualquer fase da Doença de Alzheimer, ao atuar tanto na manutenção quanto na melhora do desempenho funcional do indivíduo. Considerou-se inicialmente fatores epidemiológicos, fisiopatologia, etiologia, critérios diagnósticos e quadro clínico para um melhor entendimento da intervenção fisioterapêutica nos indivíduos portadores da doença. Os dados deste trabalho foram coletados em artigos originais e de revisão e em livros direcionados ao tema.
