Resumo: Brazil is going through a demographic transition, and faces a new reality: the rapid growth of the aging population, it has to deal with chronic diseases that use health services in a large scale and leads to a high consumption of drugs. However, it is observed that the problems presented by that portion of the population resulting from drug interactions, the effects of several drugs, and the therapeutic use of complex long-term therapy associated with the misuse of prescribed medical treatment, are very common. The major impact of non-adherence to prescribed therapy among the elderly, both in controlling symptoms and functional capacity reduces life quality and enhances the demand of the health system. This study aims to identify the reasons for noncompliance with medical treatment prescribed for the elderly in a Family Health Facility (USB), in Passo Fundo / RS, by using semi-structured interview. The obtained data were grouped into seven categories: economic factors, side effects, physical organic factor, misuse of medication, lack of family support, cultural factor, prescription adequacy, and were analyzed after considering the theoretical framework adopted by the study. The adherence of the elderly to the prescribed treatments is essential to have part of their problems minimized or resolved, with an inter and trans disciplinary view, beyond the planning and implementation of appropriate strategies for this population. Each patient should be well informed and professional approach should be individualized and considered according to the context involving each one of them. Keywords: aging, chronic diseases, medications, adherence.
