Resumo: Aging is a physiological process, ocurring throughout the body an differentiating itself from the tissues in individuals over 60 years, the oral cavity of the elderly shows a high incidence of caries and periodontal lesions and oral diseases may have implications in other bodies, as the same can not be seen as isolated body. Clinical studies show that periodontal lead the person to be at increased risk of cardiovascular disease and make other sytemic changes when compared with individuals with healthy gums. These periodontal diseases constitue themselves into aserious public health problrm dentistry, are distributed differently on the severity, age and other factors. This study aimed to search the literature articles about the involvement of systemic factors associated with periodontitis in the elderly.

This study aimed to search the literature articles about the involvement of systemic factors associated with periodontitis in the elderly.O envelhecimento é um processo fisiológico, ocorrendo em todo o corpo e diferenciando-se entre os tecidos, em indivíduos acima de 60 anos; a cavidade oral do idoso apresenta uma alta incidência de cárie e lesões periodontais e as patologias orais podem ter implicações em outros órgãos, já que a mesma não pode ser vista como órgão isolado. Estudos clínicos mostram que as periodontopatias levam a pessoa a ter um risco maior de apresentar doenças cardiovasculares e outras alterações sistêmicas quando comparadas com indivíduos com gengiva sadia. Estas doenças periodontais constituem-se em um grave problema de saúde pública odontológica, distribuindo-se de forma diferenciada quanto à gravidade, faixa etária e outros fatores.
