Health Psychologists’ Perceptions About Their Knowledge Skills and Atittudes Regarding Death

Resumo: Psychologists insertion on hospitals brought a demand not directly supplied by professional education – working with death and dying. The purpose of this study was to identify the perception of psychologists working in hospitals linked to the Secretaria de Estado de Saúde do Distrito Federal, about their knowledge, skills and attitudes regarding the subject of death. Semi-structured interviews were made with 15 psychologists from four different hospitals. The data was then analyzed in thematic categories. The following categories were identified: professional education to work with death, the personal attitude regarding death, the impact of death on the professional and its team, matters that leads to physical and/or emotional distress and the reality of the work with death. The pain experienced beneath the patient’s death and the family´s response makes necessary an educational supply that addresses to this subject – for psychologists and all health professional composing the team.

Este estudio ha tenido como objetivo identificar la percepción de psicólogos que trabajan en hospitales vinculados con el Secretaria de Estado de Saúde do Distrito Federal, en relación a los conocimientos, habilidades y actitudes sobre la muerte. Quince psicólogos de cuatro hospitales respondieron una entrevista semi-estructurada. Los datos se analizaron en categorías temáticas. Se identificaron las siguientes categorías: la formación para el trabajo con la muerte, los aspectos personales relacionados con la muerte, impacto de la muerte en el profesional y en el equipo, temas que causan desgaste físico y/o emocional y la realidad del trabajo con la muerte. El sufrimiento generado por la muerte de los pacientes y por las respuestas de la familia provoca la necesidad de formación dirigida para el tema, de los psicólogos y todos los profesionales que componen el equipo de salud.    A inserção do psicólogo na área da saúde trouxe para esse profissional uma demanda de trabalho com a morte, não diretamente atendida por sua formação. O pre sente estudo objetivou identificar a percepção de psicólogos que atuam em hospitais vinculados à Secretaria de Estado de Saúde do Distrito Federal, quanto aos conhecimentos, às habilidades e às atitudes relacionados à morte. Participaram da pesquisa 15 psicólogos de quatro hospitais, que responderam a uma entrevista semiestruturada. Os dados foram analisados em categorias temáticas. Foram identificadas as seguintes categorias: formação para o trabalho com a morte; aspectos pessoais relacionados à morte; impacto da morte no profissional e na equipe; aspectos que acarretam desgaste físico e/ou emocional; a realidade do trabalho com a morte.
