Eating Disorders and Body Image in Adolescence: An Analysis of Scientific Literature in Psychology

Resumo: The present study aimed to analyze the Psychological scientific production about eating disorders and body image in adolescents from 2003 to 2007. The process became with an computerized search at the PsycInfo’s database, for it was used as keywords “body image”, “eating disorders”, and “adolescence”. From this search were extracted the abstracts and complements, which were organized into thematic categories purposed by Bardin (2008). The results allowed to identify that the number of publications remained stable over the years which has being analyzed, as well as United states and Australia were the countries that had the majority of articles published. The empirical studies had stress and were published in specialized papers of the area, as the Eating Disorders: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention and the Eating and Weight Disorders. Among the subjects studied, there were highlights for the assessment of eating disorders’ risk factors, emphasizing the females and adolescent population.

Para eso, se procedió a la búsqueda informatizada en la base de datos electrónica PsycInfo, utilizando las palabras-claves “imagen”, “trastornos alimentares”, y “adolescencia”. De esa investigación, fueron extraídos resúmenes y complementos, que fueron organizados en categorías temáticas propuestas por Bardin (2008). Los resultados permitieron identificar que el número de publicaciones se mantuvo estable a lo largo de los años del análisis, así como los Estados Unidos y Australia fueron los países que más publicaron. Los estudios empíricos se destacaron y fueron publicados en periódicos especializados del área, entre ellos el Eating Disorders: The Journal of Treatment and prevention y el Eating and Weight Disorders. Entre los temas investigados, hubo destaque para la evaluación de los factores de riesgo para trastornos alimentares, con énfasis en investigación con el sexo femenino, y la población adolescente.O presente estudo objetivou analisar a produção científica em psicologia a respeito de transtornos alimentares e imagem corporal em adolescentes, no período de 2003 a 2007. Para tanto, procedeu-se à busca informatizada na base de dados eletrônica PsycInfo, utilizando-se as palavras-chave body image, eating disorders e adolescence. Dessa pesquisa, extraíram-se resumos e complementos que foram organizados em categorias temáticas proposta por Bardin (2008). Os resultados permitiram identificar que o número de publicações se manteve estável ao longo dos anos que foram alvo de análise, assim como os Estados Unidos e a Austrália foram os países que mais publicaram. Os estudos empíricos se destacaram e foram publicados em periódicos especializados da área, dentre eles o Eating Disorders: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention e o Eating and Weight Disorders.
