The Construction of the Feminine Identity in Adolescence: A Focus on the Mother and Daughter Relationship

Resumo: The aim of this study is to understand the role of the relationship between mother and daughter during the process of construction of the feminine identity in adolescence. Ten adolescent girls from 14 to 18 years of age have participated in this research – they attend either secondary/high school or undergraduate courses and all live with their mothers. A semi-structured script with questions has been used – all applied at the interviews. Content analysis was used in the systematization and analysis of data and the psychoanalytic approach was adopted for discussion. It was observed that the identification was a facilitating aspect to the closest relationship, which enabled a better comprehension of social roles and of the own femininity. The relation between mother and daughter also contributes for the teenager to start thinking about which type of woman she wants to be, representing a starting point, and so afterwards an own feminine identity can be achieved.

Participaron de la pesquisa diez adolescentes del sexo femenino, com edad entre 14 e 18 años, que cursaban la enseñanza secundaria o la enseñanza superior, y que vivían con sus madres. Fue utilizado un plan de preguntas semiestructurado, aplicado a través de la entrevista. En la sistematización y análisis de los datos se utilizó el análisis del contenido y para la discusión fue adoptado el referencial psicoanalítico. Se observó que la identificación entre ellas es un aspecto facilitador para una relación más próxima, posibilitando una mayor comprensión de los papeles sociales y de la propia femenilidad. Esa relación también contribuye para llevar la adolescente a reflexionar sobre qué mujer desea ser, representando un punto de partida, y posteriormente alcanzar uns identidad femenina propria.Este estudo teve por objetivo compreender o papel da relação mãe e filha no processo de construção da identidade feminina na adolescência. Participaram da pesquisa dez adolescentes do sexo feminino, com idade entre quatorze a dezoito anos, que cursavam o ensino médio ou o ensino superior, e que residiam com suas mães. Foi utilizado um roteiro de perguntas semi-estruturado, aplicado através de entrevista. Na sistematização e análise dos dados foi utilizada a análise de conteúdo, e para a discussão foi adotado o referencial psicanalítico. Observou-se que a identificação entre elas é um aspecto facilitador para uma relação mais próxima, possibilitando uma maior compreensão dos papéis sociais e da própria feminilidade.
