Summary: This is a quali-quantitative and descriptive study. Its objective is analyze the content and the structure of the social representations of nurses about the person with HIV/AIDS, considering the explicit and masked elements (mute zone). The subjects were 150 nurses of a university hospital in Rio de Janeiro. Free evocations and the technique of substitution were used for the data collection. Data analyze was developed thought the methodology of construction of the Picture of Four Houses and the statistical comparison of the evocations in normal and substitution situation, thought EVOC software. The results showed central elements for the normal situation: health education, professional protection and treatment. For the substitution, were identified: the fear, prejudice and homosexuality, which with others were the probable elements of the mute zone. The method is important to make profound studies of social representations of the HIV/AIDS.

The method is important to make profound studies of social representations of the HIV/AIDS.Se trata de una investigación cuali-cuantitativa, descriptiva que tuvo como objetivo analizar el contenido y la estructura de las representaciones sociales de enfermeros sobre la persona con VIH/SIDA, con sus elementos explícitos y escondidos (zona muda). Los sujetos fueron 150 enfermeros de un hospital universitario, Rio de Janeiro. Se colectaron los datos con la técnica de evocaciones libres y la técnica de substitución. El análisis de los datos se realizó a través de la construcción del Cuadro de Cuatro Casas y de una comparación estadística entre las evocaciones en situación habitual y substitución, con auxilio del programa EVOC. Los resultados indican como elementos centrales de la representación en recolección habitual: educación en salud, protección profesional y tratamiento. En substitución, se identificó: miedo; prejuicio y homosexualidad, que fueron junto a otras evocaciones los probables elementos de zona muda. Se concluye que el método ha sido relevante para profundizar los estudios sobre las representaciones sociales del VIH/SIDA.Trata-se de um estudo quali-quantitativo, descritivo, tendo por objetivo analisar o conteúdo e a estrutura das representações sociais de enfermeiros acerca da pessoa com HIV/AIDS, considerando seus elementos explicitados e não explicitados (zona muda). Teve por sujeitos 150 enfermeiros de um hospital universitário do Rio de Janeiro. Para a coleta de dados, aplicou-se a técnica de evocações livres e a de substituição. Para análise dos dados, utilizou-se o Quadro de Quatro Casas e comparou-se estatisticamente o conjunto das evocações tradicionais e em situação de substituição, com auxílio do software EVOC. Como elementos provavelmente centrais na representação, em coleta tradicional, emergiram: educação em saúde, proteção profissional e tratamento. Para a substituição, destacaram-se: medo, preconceito e homossexualidade, que consistiram, entre outros, em possíveis elementos de zona muda.
