Tolerance and Respect for Differences: The Effects of an Educational Activity at School

Resumo: | A study of an experimental intervention that evaluated the impact of an educational activity in schools to promote tolerance and respect for each ones differences is reported. A total of 300 children participated, divided into three groups: one control (without intervention), and two experimental ones (drama and audiovisual presentation of a children’s story), these later focusing on the theme of preference for soccer teams. The intervention was assessed before and after, with a semantic differential scale range in which children attributed positive and negative adjectives to their own team as well as the opposing team. The results showed that: a more favorable evaluation of one’s own teem maintained during the two specific moments and the initially more unfavorable assessment towards the opposing team, improved significantly after the intervention. The implications of the results are discussed in relation to the school social function of improving students’ social-emotional development as well as the importance of evaluating pedagogical alternatives addressing this objective. Some limitations regarding this study and also research referrals are presented. |

Participaron 300 niños, divididos en tres grupos: controle, el experimental drama y experimental presentación audiovisual de una historia, teniendo como tema la preferencia para los equipos del fútbol. La intervención se evaluó antes y después, con una escala de diferencial semántico en que los niños atribuyeron adjetivos positivos o negativos a su propio equipo así como el equipo contrario. Los resultados mostraron: una evaluación más favorable de su propio equipo mantenida durante los dos momentos de evaluación y una valoración inicialmente más desfavorable hacia el equipo contrario, que mejoró significativamente después de la intervención. Se discuten las implicaciones de los resultados respecto a la función social escolar de mejorar el desarrollo social-emocional de estudiantes así como la importancia de evaluar alternativas pedagógicas que se dirigen este objetivo. Son referidas algunas limitaciones con respecto a este estudio y otras direcciones de investigación.Relata-se pesquisa de intervenção experimental que avaliou o impacto de atividade educativa na escola visando promover tolerância e respeito às diferenças. Participaram 300 crianças, divididas em três grupos: um controle (sem intervenção) e dois experimentais (dramatização de apresentação audiovisual de estória infantil), todos tomando como temática a preferência por times de futebol e experimental. A intervenção foi avaliada, antes e depois, por meio de uma escala de diferencial semântico em que as crianças atribuíam adjetivos positivos e negativos ao próprio time e ao time adversário. Os resultados mostraram que: (a) a avaliação mais favorável ao próprio time se manteve nos dois momentos; (b) a avaliação inicialmente mais desfavorável ao time adversário melhorou significativamente após a intervenção.
