A Look at the Caregiver of Cancer Patients Receiving Palliative Care

Resumo: The aim of this research was to check how the main caregiver of cancer patients receiving palliative care experiences her/his act of caring and how the imminent patient death affects her/his level of stress. The participants were 10 family caregivers. For data collection an interview script and the Inventory of Stress Symptoms were applied. The analysis was quantitative and qualitative. The results reveal that 100% of the participants presented stress. One observes the act of caring is experienced as a changes generator which bring specific difficulties and needs, besides, the imminent death of a relative experienced by the caregivers developed a myriad of feelings. The results are similar to those of other researches and corroborate the need of creating specific and continuous interventions to the main caregiver, in order to foster their health, quality of life, and mourning response.

Los participantes fueron 10 cuidadores familiares. En la recogida de datos fue utilizado una guia de entrevista y el inventario de síntomas de stress. El análisis fue cuantitativo y cualitativo. Los resultados mostraron que 100% de los respondientes presentaban stress. También fue verificado que el acto de cuidar es vivenciado como generador de cambios que crían dificultades y necesidades específicas, además, el vivir de la inminencia de la muerte del familiar por los cuidadores desenvolvió una gama de sentimientos. Los resultados son compatibles con aquellos de otras investigaciones y refuerzan la necesidad de elaboración de intervenciones especificas y contínuas junto al cuidador principal, para la promoción de su salud, mejora de la calidad de vida y elaboración del luto.O objetivo desta pesquisa foi averiguar como o cuidador principal de pacientes oncológicos, em Cuidados Paliativos, vivencia o seu ato de cuidar e a iminência da perda do paciente, e como isto afeta o seu nível de stress. Os participantes foram 10 cuidadores familiares. Na coleta de dados, foi utilizado um roteiro de entrevista e o Inventário de Sintomas de Stress. A análise foi quantitativa e qualitativa. Os resultados revelaram que 100% dos respondentes apresentavam stress. Verificou-se que o ato de cuidar é vivenciado como gerador de mudanças, que criam dificuldades e necessidades específicas, além disso, viver a iminência da morte do familiar pelos cuidadores desenvolveu uma gama de sentimentos.
