Cecília Meireles’ Poemas italianos, written between 1953 and 1956 during the poet’s visit to Italy and later on her return to Rio de Janeiro, compose a set of travel poems in which the Cecilian features are quite striking; the balance between reality and dream, life and death, the immediate and the eternal, light and shadow. The travel, defined as the “art of admiring” or as “another way of meditating” by the poet herself, can be unraveled by reading her Poemas italianos. This work deals with the construction of these poems based on the conception of travel in which the presence of the ephemeral and the sacred are important concepts for understanding and analyzing the poems. In particular, we take a more in-depth reading about the poems in the setting of the city of Pompeii, in order to point out the understanding of the ephemeral in the work of Cecília Meireles. The reading of the Poemas italianos reveals the rich human experience of the poet and their relations with people and different cultures, carried out through the voices, silence, and loneliness of the dead, now alive through the memories constructed in the poetry. This makes Cecília, as mentioned by Damasceno (1976, p. 10, translated by the author) in the preface to Ilusões do mundo, a human being “sprouted from a greater acceptance of the world and its bewilderments [...]”.
