Resumo: The present work tried to demonstrate that the novel O Evangelho segundo Jesus Cristo (The Gospel according to Jesus Christ), written by José Saramago, may be interpreted as a tragic vision of Jesus´ figure. It searches to pursue the concept of the classical and modern tragedy and the character of the hero, as well. The novel is involved by Saragamo`s Marxist conception of the world. He is interested in rescuing the human nature of Jesus and refutes his divinity. In the beginning of the novel Saramago points Jesus in search of his real nature whether he is a man or a god but according Saramago´s point of view Jesus´ humanity is the fundamental trace of his life.

Buscou-se rastrear o conceito clássico e moderno do termo tragédia. Percebemos também a cosmovisão saramagiana de viés marxista como base de sustentação da criação do romance.
