This paper aims at investigating the chronotope in the work O tempo e o vento, by Erico Verissimo, which is characterized by a recurrent set of spatiotemporal motifs that support the character’s different experiences and possible transformations as the narrative progresses. More than mere background for the plot, time and space put the diegesis in motion and are fundamental to the construction of the heroes' identity throughout their trajectory, given that at each historical time there is a new man and a new perception of the world. These categories will be studied through different perspectives, the following being the major ones: literary theory, phenomenology and philosophy of language. The discussion of the proposed matter will be in turn supported by the writings of Gérard Genette, Mircea Eliade, Gaston Bachelard and Mikhail Bakhtin, Russian author whose theories are specifically important to the study of the chronotope and the speeches produced by the subject in space-time. A multidisciplinary treatment of the aesthetic object is considered to cover a wider scope in the research, as different points of view on the matter can be established. In order to carry out this task, time and space will first be analyzed as narrative categories studied by literary theory. Then, these categories will be seen, unified and transformed by Mikhail Bakhtin through the lens of the philosophy of language, as one single concept, the chronotope. The look is thought to become relevant as a catalyst of selfawareness, from the look regarding the other: who looks, when and from where.
