The cladding of facades and floors of tall buildings with stone plates is a common procedure, especially in large cities and its use has increased in recent times. The process of internationalization, caused by the opening of the market, leads to the use of more effective methods and processes of design and of production. The requirement of the market also increases, following the process of globalization. With the technological developments that occurred in Brazil in the sector of rocks for cladding, in the last decades, there have been developments in the steps of the production chain of the dimension stone claddings (since the extraction, obtaining the plates, development of project, until the placing/implementation). The objective of the thesis is to show that the technological evolution in the steps of the production chain has contributed to the improvement of the production process of dimension stone claddings on facades of contemporary corporate buildings and that, as a consequence, there is better quality of the final product object of the thesis. In the thesis it is presented the importance, the scenario and the profile of the sector in the last three decades; the influential factors in the productive chain, responsible for technological developments in the sector, and these in the steps of production of claddings; important edifications and contemporary works that used stone claddings in their facades; the innovations and the exploitation of rocks in the contemporaneity with the great challenge of sustainability. For the verification of the main factors responsible for the technological evolution of the sector are carried out researches in sources and field survey. For the field survey, are adopted contemporary buildings, that stands out by technological and constructive aspects adopted and whose projects and constructions were developed in the last three decades in the city of São Paulo. From there it is traced the profile of this sector in these decades and it is made a parallel of this evolution with improvements observed in these stages whose results are reflected in various positive aspects in the facades of such works. It is intended that this thesis contribute with sector in the identification of the improvements, in the continuity of the works of generation of standards for the stone cladding, in Brazil. It is the intention, also, that the thesis be added to other works that are addressing issues relating to quality and technological development of the various stages of the productive chain of civil construction.
