Resumo: | Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder of multifactorial origin that consists of persistent deficits in interaction and social communication; restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior, interests or activities, which may include stereotyped movements, use of objects and speech. Symptoms are present from the beginning of development and cause impairments and limitations to the individual's functionality. In view of the clinical presentation of a child with ASD, it is expected that parents, at least initially, will go through a difficult process of adjustment to the new reality, especially mothers, who are most often responsible for the integral care of that child. In the present study, variables that may be indicators of risk or protection for the mental health of mothers of children with ASD in a situation of social vulnerability were investigated. For this, a sociodemographic questionnaire developed for the research was used; Brazilian Economic Classification Criterion - Model ABEP; Inventory of Stress Symptoms for Adults (ISSL - LIPP, 2000); Self-Assessment Inventory for Adults 18 to 59 years old (ASR; Achenbach & Rescorla, 2003); Resilience Scale (WAGNILD; YOUNG, 1993), adapted by Pesce, Assis and Avanci (2006); Social Support Network Scale (MOS-SSS - SHERBOURNE, 1991) and Caregiver Overload Scale (SCAZUFCA, 2002). Eighteen mothers of children with ASD participated in the study and the main results pointed to the high level of stress, overload and internalizing behavioral problems (anxiety / depression, withdrawal and somatic complaints), which can be indicators of psychological risk. The level of resilience was moderate and the presence of a social support network, even if not enough, can be seen as indicators of protection for the mental health of these mothers. |

The level of resilience was moderate and the presence of a social support network, even if not enough, can be seen as indicators of protection for the mental health of these mothers.O Transtorno do Espectro do Autismo (TEA) é um transtorno do neurodesenvolvimento de origem multifatorial que consiste em déficits persistentes na interação e na comunicação social; padrões de comportamento, interesses ou atividades restritos e repetitivos, que podem incluir movimentos, uso de objetos e fala estereotipados.
