The purpose of this dissertation is to discuss the identity issues present in the graphic novel Persepolis, written and illustrated by the author of Iranian origin Marjane. Starting from this reflection, the study problematizes the potential of the graphic novels, a segment of comic books, dealing with topics of social relevance, such as the formation of identity and diaspora, subjects intrinsic to the context of late modernity. Having as references Stuart Hall and Anthony Giddens, the research raises concepts about identity and modernity and analyzes how these conceptions are present in the narrative of Persepolis. Questioning regarding the potential of the graphic novels as a means for the reflection of complex contents it will be based on the studies carried out by Wiil Eisner, Waldomiro Vergueiro and Paulo Ramos. Corpus chosen for the investigation, Persepolis chronicles the adolescence and youth of the character Marji during the years of the Cultural Revolution in Iran, from the year 1979. Inserted in a conflicting context, where family values – progressive and open to Western customs – did not correspond with those defended by the Islamic regime – conservative and reclusive – Marji embarks on a journey of self-discovery, where political, religious and culture will go into shock as the character develops as an individual. Originally published in four volumes, in the French language, the graphic novel Persepolis was well received by the critics and the public and won a film version in 2007.
