Resumo: The Down syndrome is the most common cromossomic disfunction found in the human specie. The postural alterations presented in these population are observed very often and most of the times comes from ligament laxity and hypotonic muscles. When these alterations are associated with overweight and obesity, common condition in the population at all ages, its signs can be even bigger if it is not diagnosed in early stages may become irreversible and severe on the adult age. This study of transversal analytical character and correlational had as a purpose to stablish the relation between the body posture and overweight and/or obesity in teenagers of ages from 15 to 19 years old, from both genders (male e female), with DS by biophotogametry and compare it with Down syndrome teenagers with normal weight. The research took place in two institutions of the city of São Paulo, on the first semester of 2007. The data for the study were collected through a functional evaluation which was part of it the Body Mass Index (BMI) and postural evaluation realized through biophotogametry. The angles and linear distances were found through an analysis done by Coreldraw-13 software. All the statistical procedures were realized using the BioStat software 4.0 version. On the results, postural alterations were observed more often in DS teenagers with overweight and/or obesity which are the increase of the hiperlordosis, pelvic antiversion, valgum knee, anteriorization of the head and scoliosis. This way, we can suggest that obesity is a factor responsible for the significantly increase in postural alterations.
