Resumo: Trata, o artigo, da obra do poeta Teófilo Dias (1854 – 1889) que, expoente de sua geração de escri-tores (a geração de 1870), reelaborou representações artísticas (como as faunas e floras naturais do Brasil) toma-das do Romantismo para criar seus próprios ideais de civilização, progresso e república.TEÓFILO DIAS AND THE NATURE OF A MODERN BRASILThis article investigates the works of Teófilo Dias (1854 – 1889): the most important poet of his generation (the generation of 1870). Teófilo Dias recreated the artistic forms taken from the Brazilian Romantic-ism (such as the images of Brazilian flora and fauna). Understand this recreation process permit us to understand the way the poet composes his own ideals of civilization, progress and republic.
