In vitro fertilization (IVF) is the technique used to produce embryos in the laboratory, following steps that are necessary for its establishment, in order to obtain embryos suitable for transfer. Among the IVF stages, in vitro culture is extremely important, so that the embryos can be established in a viable medium to their development. In view of the above mentioned, the objective of this experiment is to evaluate the effect of Canthaxanthin added to the culture medium on the in vitro embryo production produced from conventional frozen semen of 5/8 Girolando bull. To perform the experiment, bovine ovaries were harvested at the slaughterhouse immediately after slaughter, and oocytes classified as quality 1 and 2, which were then followed for maturation for 24 hours. The IVF of the mature oocytes was done with conventional frozen semen and incubated for 18h before being placed in the culture, according to the following description: Control Group (C) - No addition of Canthaxanthin; Treatment 1 (T1) - Addition of 1 mM of Canthaxanthin; Treatment 2 (T2) - Addition of 0.5 mM of Canthaxanthin; Treatment 3 (T3) - Addition of 0.25 mM of Canthaxanthin. On Day 3 and 8, after Day 0 (day of IVF), the cleavage and blastocyst rates, respectively, were evaluated. There were found significant differences in the rates of cleavage and blastocysts at the different concentrations of canthaxanthin used.
