Resumo: This study analyzed for the serum concentration of heavy metal cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), copper (Cu) and chromium (Cr) in blood samples from 66 manatees (Trichechus manatus manatus) sound, both sexes (25 males and 41 females) kept under captive conditions in Brazil. The animals were classified according to age: neonate (≤ 30 days); puppy (31-730 days); youth (731-2190 days) and adult (> 2191 days). Blood was collected and then centrifuged to obtain serum, and subsequently digested in nitric acid and then subjected to a thermostated bath at 90°C for a period of one hour. For the quantification of the metals employed to Spectrometry Optical Emission Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP OES). Among the 66 serum samples tested, 100% had levels of at least one of the metals, and only 7.57% submitted to simultaneous concentration (Cu), (Cd) and (Cr). There was no correlation between the serum concentration of metals and the variables: sex, age and environment. For the analysis of lead (Pb), the samples had concentrations outside the detection limit, thus were not evaluated statistically. The concentrations of heavy metals found in this study were higher than those reported in other studies. Among the possible sources of contamination various human activities are among the priorities. These results raise concerns regarding the health of animals and the means which are inserted. However the study of target specimen, according to their characteristics, proved efficient as a sentinel species. Additional researches regarding metal bioaccumulation in sirenians and in the environmentare required.

Additional researches regarding metal bioaccumulation in sirenians and in the environmentare required.Objetivou-se com este estudo pesquisara concentração sérica dos metais pesados cádmio (Cd), chumbo (Pb), cobre (Cu) e cromo (Cr), em amostras de sangue de 66 peixes-bois marinhos (Trichechus manatus manatus) hígidos, de ambos os sexos (25 machos e 41 fêmeas) mantidos sob condição de cativeiro no Brasil. Os animais foram classificados de acordo com a idade em neonato (≤ 30 dias); filhote (31 a 730 dias); juvenil (731 a 2190 dias) e adulto (> 2191 dias). O sangue obtido foi centrifugado para obtenção do soro sanguíneo, sendo posteriormente digerido em ácido nítrico e em seguida submetido ao banho termostatizado a 90°C por um período de uma hora. Para a quantificação de dos metais empregou-se a técnica de Espectrometria de Emissão Óptica com Plasma Indutivamente Acoplado (ICP OES). Dentre as 66 amostras séricas analisadas, 100% apresentaram concentrações de pelo menos um dos metais, e apenas 7,57% apresentaram concentração simultânea para (Cu), (Cd) e (Cr). Não houve correlação entre a concentração sérica dos metais e as variáveis sexo, idade e ambiente. Para a análise de chumbo (Pb), as amostras apresentaram concentrações fora do limite de detecção, deste modo não foram avaliadas estatisticamente. Os valores das concentrações dos metais pesados encontrados neste estudo foram superiores aos relatados em outras pesquisas. Dentre as possíveis fontes de contaminação, as diversas ações antrópicas estão entre as prioritárias. Tais resultados geram preocupações no que concerne a saúde dos animais bem como ao meio o qual estão inseridos.
