This study sets the analysis of the social representations that residents of the community Sítio dos Pintos have on local development related to the extension policies of the Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco (UFRPE). The main purpose of this study is to understand the appropriations, opinions and subjectivities that the members of the community – located around the Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco (UFRPE), Recife-PE – have on the university according to the extension as a vector of local development. The theoretical framework emphasizes the categories: academic extension, local development, social capital and daily life. Thus, in the theoretical chapter, we consider the concepts of authors such as Freire (1983), Kunsch (1992) and Nogueira (2005), when it comes to academic extension. By relating academic extension to local development, we consider Oliveira (2001), Buarque (2002) and Jara (1998), followed by Bourdieu (1998), Putnam (2001) and Coleman (2001), whose theories on social capital complement the connections between the extension and local development. Secondly, we introduce the phenomenon of Social Representations considering the analysis of its first theoretical, Moscovici (1978, 2009), with the contribution of other authors. We approached the object of study, the community Sítio dos Pintos, through the development of relations with the daily life (Certeau, 2008) and community (Bauman, 2003; Peruzzi, 2006), besides the historic appeal (Chartier, 1988) and the importance to consider, even if briefly, the collective memory (Halbwachs, 1990) studied. On the next step, the methodology, with qualitative nature and based on social representations. The data collection was based on interviews with 30 residents, and the analysis were performed with the theoretical and methodological support of the Discurso do Sujeito Coletivo (DSC), developed by researchers at the Universidade de São Paulo – USP (LEFEVRE E LEFEVRE, 2010). With the support of the tool Qualiquantsoft, we analyzed the discourses that interpret the social representations of the residents of the Sítio dos Pintos on the site UFRPE. They reveal, among other findings, the faith on the neighboring institution, which can act, through the extension, on projects and actions that contribute to the local development.
