Resumo: The aim of this study was to analyze how the jeans laundries in the city of Toritama/PE have been developing their organizational learning and competences acquisition before the environmental suitability requirements. This manufacture activity began in Toritama, in 1977. Its growth has led to laundries foundation for washing and finishing of jeans components. There are, currently, about 55 laundries in the city. The washing process consumes large volumes of water which, in turn, are necessary to treat the water again in order to avoid negative effluents into the environment. Because of these effluents, the Government is involved with public policies and regulations in the laundries in order to adapt their wash processes. There are also support projects consisting in courses and training for entrepreneurs and their laundries, as they need to develop new competences and learning about their business operations related to environmental issues. Organizational learning and competences are the focus of this work. Organizational learning refers to knowledge and practices acquired by firms through internal and external sources. The competences are related to the mastery and the application of the knowledge learned by companies. In addition to these concepts, the literature review deals with sustainable development since it„s considered the conservation of nature in the jeans wash activity; public policies, according to environmental laws and regulatory norms, and organizational changes because the entrepreneurs need to reform their laundries, required by regulation bodies. This work has used an exploratory research based on interviews, observation and documents collection, as well as the case study method with a qualitative approach and content analysis. This survey was carried out in three laundries (a small, a medium and a large one). During the intervention process, the greatest requirement from regulation bodies are focused on the use of water, boiler, sludge treatment and chemicals storage – these are the biggest pollution causes. It can also be seen the labor safety due to the employees exposure to accidents. The results indicate that after the intervention, the laundries have been acquiring new learning and competences of their technical and operational procedures for washing jeans, and following the instructions, regulations and environmental laws. In the small and medium laundries the suitability has been gradually coming through the itens with a greater requirement; the largest laundry is already adequate, being a reference in water treatment. It‟s been concluded that entrepreneurs have been acquiring an understanding about the importance of operating the laundries without polluting the environment.

A atividade de confecção se iniciou em Toritama a partir de 1977. Seu crescimento levou à criação de lavanderias para a lavagem e acabamento das peças em jeans. Atualmente, existem cerca de 55 lavanderias no município. O processo de lavagem consome grande volume de água que, por sua vez, é necessário ao tratamento da mesma a fim de evitar efluentes negativos no meio ambiente. Devido aos efluentes gerados, o Estado, com suas políticas públicas e órgãos reguladores, intervém nas lavanderias com o propósito de adequar seus processos de lavagens. Há também os projetos de apoio consistentes em cursos e treinamentos para capacitação dos empresários e suas lavanderias, visto que precisam desenvolver novas aprendizagens e competências sobre suas operações produtivas relacionadas às questões ambientais. Aprendizagem organizacional e competências são o foco deste trabalho. Aprendizagem organizacional refere-se aos conhecimentos e suas práticas adquiridas pelas empresas através de fontes internas e externas. As competências estão relacionadas ao domínio e aplicação dos conhecimentos aprendidos pelas empresas. Além desses conceitos, a revisão de literatura trata do desenvolvimento sustentável, por ser considerada a preservação da natureza na atividade de lavagem de jeans; políticas públicas, em função das leis ambientais e normas reguladoras; e mudança organizacional, devido aos empresários necessitarem de reformas em suas lavanderias por exigência dos órgãos reguladores. Este trabalho utilizou-se da pesquisa exploratória com base na entrevista, observação e coleta documental, bem como do método de estudo de caso com enfoque qualitativo e da análise de conteúdo. A pesquisa foi realizada em três lavanderias (de pequeno, médio e maior porte). No processo de intervenção, as exigências maiores dos órgãos reguladores concentram-se no uso da água, caldeira, tratamento do lodo e guarda de produtos químicos – estes são os maiores provocadores de poluição. Observa-se, também, a segurança do trabalho devido à exposição dos empregados aos acidentes. Os resultados apontam que após a intervenção as lavanderias estão adquirindo novos aprendizados e competências técnico-operativas dos seus processos de lavagens de jeans, e seguindo as instruções, normas reguladoras e leis ambientais. Nas lavanderias de menor e médio porte, a adequação vem sendo gradativa pelos itens de maiores exigências; a lavanderia de maior porte já se encontra adequada, sendo referência no tratamento da água.
