Resumo: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of ovariosalpingohisterectomy on tear production, cytology and microbiology bitches. They were used 56 castrated bitches, being subjected to clinical and ophthalmic examinations, microbiological evaluation and conjunctival exfoliative cytology of eyelid conjunctiva and serum levels of estradiol and testosterone. We evaluated animals aged between one and four, divided into whole groups of animals and neutered animals, respecting the range of one to four years between the groups. It was found that dogs with reduced tear production predominated superficial epithelial cells and increased keratinized cells in the conjunctival cytology. In the microbiological study of the palpebral conjunctiva it was observed that there is no change in the microbiota, and Staphylococcus sp bacterial agent found and among the fungi Candida sp. It was observed that 59.9% of castrated animals show a decrease in Schirmer Tear Test (TLS), and of these 39.5% had values below 10 mm, in relation to Break Time Shoots Lacrimal (TRFL) 98.8 % of animals belonging to the castrated groups of individuals showed a decrease. Compared the effectiveness of tests used for dry eye detection, TRFL was more efficient. There was a weak correlation between TLS and testosterone levels as in TRFL and testosterone levels, on the other hand, there was a strong positive correlation between these tests and estradiol levels. It concludes that changes in sex hormone levels that occur after the dogs were subjected to castration quantitatively and qualitatively affect the tear film. What characterizes these animals have a greater predisposition to the development of dry eye.

Submitted by Mario BC (mario@bc.ufrpe.br) on 2018-02-26T13:20:01Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Daniela da Silva Pereira Campinho.pdf: 1271676 bytes, checksum: 05bb795914fa263efc9ae3c327340901 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2018-02-26T13:20:01Z (GMT). description This study aimed to evaluate the effect of ovariosalpingohisterectomy on tear production, cytology and microbiology bitches.
