Since the beginning of implementation of trade Protocol in SADC, in January of 2001, progress has been achieved in the food supply system in Mozambique. This was a result of intraregional trade liberalization in several areas including goods and services, new information technologies and access. Such progress have provoked significant changes in the productive base, improving linkages along production clusters and raisin the competitiveness. Thus, in this study, we investigate the Irish potato production chain and the determinants of the transactions relationship between the local farmers with exporting intermediate (wholesale and retail) in the Zambezi Valley region in Mozambique. The theory of transaction costs was used to examine the current contractual strategies in use among the stakeholders along the Irish potato production chain. To understand the specificities of contractual mechanism and the competitive environment, we firstly developed the model which encompasses the contractual relations in the production chain, and general description of stakeholders and the analysis of the transactions between the local farmers and intermediate was undertaken. A key result of our analysis is that both the local farmers and the intermediate traders – wholesalers and retail - are guided by three different marketing and contractual strategies, namely the implicit contracts, the partnership and integration in the production, and the free market strategy. The common social networks co-ordinate the activities of the potato chain production, and the distribution chain based on these types of networks possible the instantaneous substitution of its members so that the production is commercialized in the national market.
