The large amount of waste produced, reflecting the consumption lifestyle adopted by the population, is increasing. Large retail enterprises are spaces for buying products with different options, generating different types of waste, becoming a potential polluter. Generating wealth, assuming sustainable responsibility is a challenge for companies, the need for adaptation and innovation in performance to meet opportunities that guarantee competition in the market. The study aimed to identify indicators of efficiency, effectiveness, effectiveness, economy and legality by material typology, establishing management models with operational steps, with a view to improving procedural management of solid waste management in Shopping centers in the Metropolitan Region of Recife - PE. The dissertation is organized in five chapters: Chapter 1 - Solid waste management models: proposal for continuous improvement; Chapter 2 - Bibliometric study of indicators for sustainability of shopping center operations from 1999 to 2018; Chapter 3 - Performance indicators for solid waste management in Shopping centers in the Metropolitan Region of Recife – PE; Chapter 4 - Analysis of gravimetric characterization of solid waste: case study in Shopping centers in the Metropolitan Region of Recife-PE, Brazil; Chapter 5 - Procedural improvements in solid waste management models in shopping centers in the Metropolitan Region of Recife-PE (Brazil). The results show that the study of operational models, through the technological routes of waste management in enterprises, contributes to the understanding of the degree of complexity and vulnerabilities. It was possible to observe, through the bibliometric study, the production of articles that deal with the problem of solid waste in shopping centers, being a topic with few publications, further research is recommended. The possibility of evaluating the performance of the establishments' operations was verified, based on solid waste management indicators, observing their parameters to point out the procedural non-conformities. In this sense, the research aims to contribute to the procedural improvement of solid waste management in retail enterprises, through the identified indicators, seeking sustainable, social and economic attention.
