Resumo: The aim of the study is to investigate whether and how Brazilian Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) ranked in the 2020/2021 edition of ARWU, Leiden, QS and THE mention and use academic rankings in their Institutional Development Plan (PDI). The research is justified by the increasing use of rankings for university management as evidenced by the academic literature. The study adopts a qualitative and quantitative approach, analyzing the presence and content of mentions of rankings in PDI's. The results show that 59.6% of the universities analyzed in 2022 mentioned rankings in their PDI's, representing an increase of 7.9% compared to the 2019 study. In addition, a variety of approaches are observed in the PDI's, such as: performing in-depth analysis of rankings; simple reference to the institutional position reached; adoption of performance targets; and the creation of spaces for monitoring results. The study shows that the interest in academic rankings, on the part of Brazilian universities that appear in the main international ranking tables, has been increasing significantly.

A pesquisa é justificada pelo crescente uso dos rankings para a gestão universitária e adota uma abordagem qualitativa, analisando a presença e o conteúdo das menções aos rankings nos PDI's. Os resultados mostram que 59,6% das universidades analisadas em 2022 mencionaram rankings em seus PDI's, representando um aumento de 7,9% em relação ao estudo de 2019. Observou-se uma variedade de abordagens e enfoques nos PDI's, tais como: realização de análise aprofundada dos rankings, simples referência à posição institucional alcançada, adoção de metas de desempenho e a criação de espaços de monitoramento de resultados.
