Resumo: The prevalence of halitosis is high and affects both genders, age, ethnicity. Nevertheless, epidemiological data on chronic halitosis are scarce. The American Dental Association estimates that approximately 50% of adults have had at least an occasional complaint of halitosis, while 25% seem to have a serious and chronic. There are several ways in the literature that in any way suggest or confirm the presence of halitosis. Consider only three truly important: the sensory analysis, gas chromatography and VSC monitors. This study used the method of gas chromatography to compare the presence of volatile sulfur compounds in edentulous patients, rehabilitated with removable prosthesis and dental implants.

Mesmo assim, dados epidemiológicos de halitose crônica são escassos. A American Dental Association considera que cerca de 50% da população adulta já teve pelo menos uma queixa ocasional de halitose, enquanto 25% parecem ter um problema grave e crônico. Existem várias citações na literatura que, de alguma forma, sugerem ou confirmam a presença de halitose. Consideram apenas três verdadeiramente relevantes: o exame organoléptico, cromatografia gasosa e monitores CSVs.
