Resumo: Aging is a natural process and physiological happens differently in each individual. While aging will not necessarily be related to diseases and disabilities, the elderly becomes a strong candidate to complain of back pain. The present study aimed to investigate the levels of quality of life and compare them elderly affected by low back pain and not affected. This was a cross-sectional study in a population of individuals 60 years or more of the areas of the Family Health Strategy "Vila São Paulo" in the city of Bauru, São Paulo, a total of 643 subjects. It was found in this study aged 60 to 69 years, in a stable, low education, receiving a five minimum wages, which initiated the work activities under the age of women. Aspects Functional Capacity, Role- Physical, Pain and General health both subjects in Group 1 (with pain) as Group 2 (no pain), women had higher average scores, with statistically significant difference whether presented score zero in some areas. The aspects Vitality, Role-Social, Emotional and Mental Health Aspect noted that the domains Vitality and Emotional Aspects average the scores were very close in both groups for both sexes. Already in the fields Role-Social and Mental women outnumber men as well in both groups, with emphasis on Mental Health. The path to improved health of the population studied may be the involvement of health professionals in the Family home care to elderly and practices in the health units, involving both sexes, with various activities that provide improved social interaction, since older people in general, who have busy social life, have better perceptions of QOL

Apesar de o envelhecimento não estar, necessariamente, relacionado às doenças e incapacidades, o idoso torna-se um forte candidato a apresentar queixas de lombalgia. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo investigar os níveis de qualidade de vida e compará-los entre idosos acometidos pela dor lombar e os não acometidos. Tratou-se de um estudo de delineamento transversal em uma população de indivíduos de 60 anos ou mais das áreas de abrangência da Estratégia Saúde da Família “Vila São Paulo” na cidade de Bauru, São Paulo, num total de 643 sujeitos. Encontrou-se neste estudo idosos com 60 e 69 anos, em união estável, baixa escolaridade, recebendo de um a cinco salários mínimos, que iniciaram as atividades de trabalho com idade inferior a das mulheres. Nos aspectos Capacidade Funcional, Limitação por Aspectos Físicos, Dor e Estado geral de saúde tanto os indivíduos do Grupo 1 (com dor) como os do Grupo 2 (sem dor), as mulheres apresentaram maiores scores médios, com diferença estatisticamente significante, mesmo apresentado score zero em alguns domínios. Quanto aos aspectos Vitalidade, Limitação por Aspectos Sociais, Aspecto Emocional e Saúde Mental notou-se que os domínios Vitalidade e Aspectos Emocionais os scores médios foram muito próximos nos dois grupos para ambos os sexos. Já nos domínios Limitação por Aspectos Sociais e Saúde mental as mulheres superam os homens também em ambos os grupos, com destaque para a Saúde Mental.
