Resumo: Introduction: To investigate the reliability and reproducibility of the individual assessment of midpalatal suture maturation in computed tomography for potential application in Orthodontics and Radiology. Methods: The sample consisted of 202 cone-beam and multi-slice computed tomography (CBCT and MSCT, respectively) scans of patients aged between 11 and 21 years old. Sixty axial slices (n=33 females and 27 males) were randomly selected out of the sample for the individual assessment of midpalatal suture maturation. For the investigation of the reliability and reproducibility of the method, two groups of examiners were established. The first group consisted of 11 orthodontists and the second consisted of 10 radiologists. Each group examined the images twice within an interval of 21 days. During the first and second analyses, the sequence of images was randomized to reduce potential bias. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was applied to assess the inter- and intra-examiner agreement. Results: The overall interexaminer agreement was satisfactory in the first (ICC: 0.48) and the second (ICC: 0.44) analyses. The intraexaminer agreement outcomes were similar between orthodontists (ICC: 0.49) and radiologists (ICC: 0.52). Conclusion: The method for individual assessment of midpalatal suture maturation revealed potential reliability and reproducibility. However, it depends on the level of training and technical skills for image analysis and interpretation

Método: Foram selecionados aleatoriamente 60 cortes tomográficos axiais da sutura palatina mediana de um total de 202 tomografias computadorizadas de pacientes entre 11 e 21 anos. Destes 60 pacientes selecionados, 33 eram do sexo feminino e 27 do sexo masculino. As tomografias computadorizadas eram provenientes de dois tipos de tomógrafos, feixe cônico e multi-slice, de diferentes centros radiológicos. Para a concordância interexaminadores e intraexaminadores, esses 60 cortes axiais da sutura palatina mediana foram analisados por 2 grupos de avaliadores, sendo um composto por 11 ortodontistas e o outro por 10 radiologistas, que realizaram duas avaliações com intervalo de 21 dias. No período entre as avaliações os cortes foram novamente randomizados. Os níveis de concordância intraexaminadores e interexaminadores foram avaliados pela estatística CCI. A comparação do tipo de tomógrafo também foi realizada. Resultados: A concordância interexaminadores geral foi considerada satisfatória com CCI 0,48 na primeira avaliação e 0,44 na segunda. Na análise intraexaminador, o CCI foi de 0,52 para os radiologistas e 0,49 para os ortodontistas.
