Flexible architecture: movement and kinetic systems

In this paper we address kinetic architecture with the goal of discussing the concepts of change, adaptability and transformation of spaces depending on the user’s needs and the ability of architecture to meet new functional programs. Recent kinetic systems used in buildings are addressed and its role in architecture is discussed. The article also focuses on how these systems enable flexibility and allow architecture to answer the new changing needs of society. Some kinetic systems to be implemented in buildings are proposed which would respond to different goals and different forms of flexibility and allow different types of occupations.
