Public space as a living place: temporary interventions and redefinition of human scale in the historic center of Ouro Preto – MG

This work addresses the impact and creation of temporary interventions in the Historic Center of Ouro Preto in Minas Gerais, in order to analyze how public spaces of this place could be more attractive and useful to users. It is believed that these interventions make people closer to the city, experiencing it, especially local residents. Therefore, the objective of this research is to understand this relation and propose the use of tactical furniture to rethink the potential of the space that surrounds historical and tourist landmarks. Methodologically, the cutout where the interventions would take place (Largo do Cinema, Praça Tiradentes, Largo do Coimbra) was designed and then morphological surveys of the surroundings were carried out. From this analysis, a proposal for modular “seats” was elaborated. As a result, the modules created are colorful and easy to handle, enabling the creation of different layouts. The need to re-functionalize the landscape in an accessible, creative and low-cost way was understood, considering its current uncomfortable and undemocratic use, where local residents are neglected and spaces give way to vehicle parking.
