Urbanization and socio-spatial formation in the Este Zone of São Paulo: Historical aspects and urban shape

This article discusses the historical aspects of the urbanization of the city of São Paulo highlighting the socio-spatial formation of the extremeeast of the city to its effectiveness as a consolidated periphery. The text addresses the factors that provided the fast growth of the citytowards the east region and the changes in its urban shape, and to demonstrate the features which determined the transformation of thesuburbs on periphery. The text also highlights the work of Professor Aroldo Edgard de Azevedo, on the east suburbs of São Paulo (1945),a references to the east zone of the city in the first fifty years of the twentieth century. We use references that address this issue critically andthat allowed us to observe that the large urban obstacles of this transformation process from suburb to periphery dates from the 1970s. This  paper aims to demonstrate how this process that produced great urban and social inequalitieswas.
