Resumo: In the early 1940’s Brazilian photographer and moviemaker Benedito Junqueira Duarte introduced among us the idea of a scientific cinema, a cinema organically intimate to the scientific research. In despite of his important contribution in defining precisely what this subject could be, he made more than 500 movies, half a part of them being considered true scientific films, mainly in the field of medical-surgical investigations. The article aims to argue on the very possibilities Duarte’s work can contribute to an understanding of the past and the future of cinema.

Nos idos dos anos 1940, o fotógrafo e cineasta brasileiro Benedito Junqueira Duarte introduziu entre nós a ideia de um cinema científico, um cinema organicamente íntimo à pesquisa científica. Em que pese sua importante contribuição na precisa definição do que pode ser esse tema, ele realizou mais de 500 filmes, metade dos quais podendo ser considerados verdadeiros filmes científicos, principalmente no campo das investigações médico-cirúrgicas. O artigo visa argumentar sobre as reais possibilidades que a obra de Duarte pode contribuir para uma compreensão do passado e do futuro do cinema. Universidade de São Paulo.
