Resumo: The central theme of the paper is the industrial firms' behavior in networks of technologicalknowledge. The importance of knowledge flows is recognized in the economicdiscussion of technological change as an essential element for firms to innovate. Theaim of the study is to understand the behavior of cognitive firms located geographically close when establishing knowledge flows considered relevant to their processes forimprovement and development of new products and processes. A field survey usingthe methodology Social Networks Analyses was performed in two agglomerationsof machines for footwear producers: one from Italy and one from Brazil. The resultsrevealed the existence of knowledge flows restricted to some firms and rarefied as wellas different cognitive behaviors, indicating that in the two clusters coexist heterogeneousfirms that play different roles, some well articulated while others isolated fromthe technological knowledge network.

Considerando isso, objetiva-se compreender a importância da proximidade geográfica para a geração de inovações tecnológicas de firmas de aglomerações produtivas. Para tanto, optou-se pela realização de uma investigação de campo comparativa entre duas aglomerações do segmento produtor de máquinas para calçados: um da Itália e outro do Brasil. Como principais resultados, destaca-se que as trocas de informações e de conhecimentos seguem lógicas distintas, sendo que o fluxo de conhecimento é menos denso que o de informações. Sendo assim, o conhecimento não está ‘difuso no ar’, mas flui seletivamente entre um grupo restrito de empresas que desempenham distintos papéis na rede de conhecimento, tais como: ‘absorvedoras’ e ‘fontes de conhecimento’. Universidade de São Paulo.
