Resumo: In this text we present some aspects that have characterized different approaches to the study of the short-term memory. The quantitative approach, considered by Ebbinghaus (1985), considers the memory in terms of its capacity of storage. The memory is seen as a warehouse in which the information is deposited and later retrieved; its capacity is determined by the number of items that can be stored and in terms of the duration of the stored items. The qualitative approach, based in the Gestalt tradition and on Bartlett (1932), views the memory as a process of representation or reconstruction of past events. In this approach the memory is evaluated in terms of the correspondence between the representation and what it is represented.

In this approach the memory is evaluated in terms of the correspondence between the representation and what it is represented.
