Resumo: With the aim of studying the comprehension of mental illness of patients and their families, we conducted a bibliographical study of articles in Brazilian periodicals, theses and dissertations in the period between 1993 and 2003. The identification of the sources was done through the automated search systems Latin American Literature on Health Sciences (LILACS) and the University of São Paulo's Bibliographic Data Bank On-line Global Catalog (DEDALUS). Nineteen papers were selected and four categories identified: family difficulty in the relationship with the patient; prejudice and stigma; organic/biological explanation for the illness; and fear and pain of insanity. Most of the papers show that, regarding assistance, there is a need for support and expansion of the public health system in order to meet the demands. It is believed that the number of publications is small considering the importance of the problem, showing the need for new research.

La identificación de las fuentes fue realizada por medio de los sistemas informatizados de búsqueda de Literatura Latino Americano de Ciencias de la Salud (LILACS) y el Banco de Datos Bibliográficos de la USP Catálogo on-line Global (DEDALUS). Fueron seleccionados 19 trabajos e identificados cuatro categorías: dificultad de relación familiar con el enfermo; prejuicio y estigma; explicación orgánica/biológica para la enfermedad; el miedo y el dolor de la locura. La mayoría de los trabajos nos muestra que, en relación a la asistencia, hay necesidad de apoyo y expansión de la red de salud para atender esa demanda. Se cree que el número de publicaciones es pequeño frente a la importancia del problema, mostrando la necesidad de nuevas investigaciones.Objetivando estudar a compreensão sobre doença mental de pacientes e familiares, realizamos um estudo bibliográfico de publicações em periódicos nacionais, dissertações e teses, no período de 1993 a 2003. A identificação das fontes foi realizada por meio dos sistemas informatizados de busca Literatura Latino Americano de Ciências da Saúde (LILACS) e o Banco de Dados Bibliográficos da USP Catálogo on-line Global (DEDALUS). Foram selecionados 19 trabalhos e identificados quatro categorias: dificuldade de relacionamento familiar com o doente; preconceito e estigma; explicação orgânica/biológica para a doença; o medo e a dor da loucura. A maioria dos trabalhos nos mostra que, em relação à assistência, há necessidade de apoio e expansão da rede de saúde para atender essa demanda. Acredita-se que o número de publicações seja pequeno diante da importância do problema, mostrando a necessidade de novas pesquisas.Universidade de São Paulo.
