Discourse Traditions: about their linguistic-theoretical statusand dynamics (Author: Peter Koch)

Reconsidering the Coserian tripartition of the linguistic (in an universal level, of speaking in general; a historical, of particular languages; an individual, of discourses produced in specific situations), the German romanist Peter Koch proposes adding, at the historical level, a historicity of texts or discourse traditions, constituting distinct rules from language rules. In this 1997 programmatic study, published in the ScriptOralia series by Narr (Tübingen, Germany), the author defines the concept of discourse tradition; delimits its theoretical field, postulating four linguistic fields, namely, the activity of speaking (universal), particular languages (historical), rules of discourse or discourse traditions (historical) and discourse (individual); moreover, he discusses its implications for the boundaries between Textual Linguistics and Variational Linguistics, universals of communication and textual genres and intertextuality and interdiscursivity; then presents its benefits for Literature and Linguistics, studies of orality and history of the language. Finally, Koch describes the dynamics of its formation and transformation through the processes of differentiation, mixing, convergence and disappearance. The purpose of this translation is to make accessible to the Brazilian public this reference work on the notion of discourse tradition, which has a decisive influence both in German Romanistics and in recent historical research on Brazilian Portuguese.
