Resumo: | Abstract This article explores Machado de Assis's and Laurence Sterne's recourse to humour and wit as a critical weapon to satirise society, while pointing out the differences of tone and mood in both novelists. Machado and Sterne belong to a long tradition of humourists whose 'acts of aggression' intend to shed light on the absurdity and incongruity of human behaviour and folly. |
