The magazine As Variedades ou Ensaios de Literatura was the first literary periodical published in Brazil in 1811, printed at the Silva Serva press, the first private press in the country. Having published only two issues, the magazine's pages contain historical and philosophical texts, essays on customs and values, travel reports and anecdotes, however, despite the title, no poetry, novel or fictional text was published. Through research in the magazine's numbers and dialogue with other sources, this work seeks to analyze the magazine's content based on the concept of literature that existed at the time, also presenting the context in which As Variedades emerged. It concludes that, although the texts presented are not fictional or poetic, this pioneering magazine can be defined as literary, according to the understanding of the time.
