Resumo: This is a hermeneutic study, with a phenomenological description of "Esquema de Machado de Assis", of the way Antonio Candido read Machado. As we delve into the ins and outs of the Candido's text and scrutinize the interpretive perspectives that it harvests in map of the critical fortune of then, we are confronted by his attempt to emerge from the undergrounds of writing a critical treatment of the Brazilian social relations that the writer would have hidden in the occult universe of his prose. The contribution of Candido, reader of Machado, is, however, much greater than that of presenting his own interpretation, because by catching in his critics a variety of ways of interpreting, he extended the possibilities of hermeneutical mirrors provoked by Machado, increasingly multifaceted by different ways in which it is read.

Ao nos aprofundarmos nos meandros do texto candiano e esmiuçar as perspectivas interpretativas que colhe no mapa da fortuna crítica de então, somos confrontados por sua tentativa de fazer emergir dos subterrâneos da escrita um tratamento crítico do tecido social brasileiro que o escritor teria escondido no universo oculto de sua prosa. O contributo de Candido, leitor de Machado, é no entanto muito maior que o de apresentar sua própria interpretação, pois ao flagrar nos seus críticos uma variedade de modos de interpretar, ampliou as possibilidade de espelhamentos hermenêuticos provocados por Machado, cada vez mais multifacetado pelos modos díspares com que é lido.Universidade de São Paulo.
