Resumo: Civilização hindu, written by Goan author Adeodato Barreto in 1935, besides being a presentation for the Portuguese public of the ancient civilization of India, focuses on the "New India", reborn for the anti-colonial struggle of Gandhi and Tagore. The book references a vast international political panorama of the 30’s, which involves the fascist movements, European colonialism and, implicitly, the Salazar regime in Portugal. Our goal is to show how the discourse in support of India is associated with the criticism of fascism, totalitarianism and colonialism. In this respect we also explore the concept of Oriental humanism as an expression of Goan indianism.
