Resumo: | Following the example of what was happening in the rest of Europe, at the end of the 19th century Portugal saw the birth of the lesbian, shaped by doctors and the incipient studies on sexology. The medical discourse will disseminate a certain number of clichés, in particular the link between lesbianism and prostitution. But, in the Portuguese case, it is above all in upper-class salons that the lesbians are found, most often married women, who also lead a double life. The theme will take on a new configuration at the end of the First World War after the publication of Victor Margueritte’s novel, La Garçonne, which will have an influence on Aragão Paiva, the first Portuguese author to stage the lesbian version of the Roaring Twenties. |

O discurso médico difundirá um certo número de clichês, em particular a ligação entre lesbianismo e prostituição. Mas, no caso português, é sobretudo nos salões da elite que se encontram as lésbicas, na maioria das vezes mulheres casadas, que também levam uma vida dupla.
