This article presents a general picture of Goa as seen by the author in the early 1980s, which reflected the great changes that had occurred in the territory in the twenty years previously. Though Goa has changed since the composition of this piece, much of what I wrote holds true today or forms the socio-economic background for further shifts. This article explores the genesis of the environmental concerns that have become a major focus in Goa today, as well as the explosion of the mining and tourist industries, which have stretched the territory’s once pristine natural beauty to its utmost. As well as developing industrially, Goa has seen great cultural and demographic changes since the end of Portuguese rule, which have added new layers to its essentially Indian nature and challenged communal harmony.
