Resumo: The present paper analyzes the short story "Great birds with spread wings", by Angolan author Pepetela, in the light of comparative literature, since such narrative evokes the fifth Canto of Camões' The lusiads, especially the deeds that precede and are developed in the famous episode of the Giant Adamastor. Armed with an eclectic theoretical reference, we will try to highlight the parodic points of the tale, so that the points of political criticism become evident. In this sense, we highlight the way Pepetela's narrative follows the fabulous dynamics of the Camões episode in all its moments: the arrival of the Portuguese, the attempt to barter, the conflict with Veloso, the giant Adamastor and the dispute of the gods. Thus, the very treatment of the marvelous in both works requires clarification. We aim to offer a greater opening for the understanding of the tale, which is constantly updated in the knowledge of the song of the epic and also of historical and political movements.
